Comfort and Protection

In the Apple TV+ original movie Finch, Tom Hanks’ character lives in a post-apocalyptic world prone to extreme dust storms fueled by savage winds. To shoot these violent storm scenes, we had to create a helmet and backpack that not only looked amazing but did an amazing job at keeping dirt and dust away from Mr. Hanks’ face, and pumped in filtered air, making it comfortable for him to breathe.

Like all our costumes, comfort is a very important characteristic we strive to achieve. The materials we use must be safe for the talent to wear, and our construction methods must be pleasant for them to perform in.

In an article written by Charles Pulliam-Moore for Gizmodo, he describes in his interview with Miguel Sapochnik, how the director credited Hanks’ suit for the “smoothness of the production”.

“He would come onto set in the suit, do his scenes, then sit in a chair, close his visor, turn on the AC and go to sleep,” Sapochnik recalled. “Then when we were ready, he’d open the visor and go. That might not sound unique, but it has this cumulative effect. Everybody else was ‘on’ as a result.”
